Photoshop Plugins

I downloaded the Paint Engine and the msvcrt10 and plugins.dll files a couple of weeks ago and followed the directions in the lessons. Well, it didn't work :(
I know I saw an e-mail with directions on how to download and where to install these files.

To be able to use plugins created for Adobe Photoshop in Paint Shop Pro you must have these two dll files installed correctly. The msvcrt10.dll file should be unzipped into your C:\Windows\System folder and the plugin.dll file into your C:\Windows folder.  Click on the links to download zips of the 2 files.

Picture Quality

I have always had a bit of trouble with printing quality when using images in PSP. They look clear as a bell when I have created them, but it seems once I save it as a .jpg file and then save to disk for printing out, it loses a lot of quality and winds up grainy and rather fuzzy. How can I prevent this??

When you convert an image to jpeg this automatically compresses the pixels, which results in diminished quality. Try using .tiff format (this is what I use for the cd images for the commercial printer) or even use the straight .psp format for printing.

Don't forget to set your resolution to at least 300+ dpi - the higher the better, depending on what your printer will handle (sometimes 600 or 1200). Obviously, this will result in a much larger file size, which is a consideration if you are running short of space on your computer.

You will also need to adjust the physical size of the image. Go to Image, Resize - first adjust the resolution and then click on Actual Size and enter the measurements you want the image to print out at. Try a test print on a small image first before you start printing off a whole heap of things just to make sure it looks OK. Due to the higher resolution it will take much longer to print out as well.

Printer & Paper Queries

What type of printer are you using and what type of paper do you most often use for these designs that you create? Do you run a test print first of some kind?

I'm using a Canon BJC2100SP printer and just use ordinary copy paper to print onto. Nothing fancy. If I'm printing a marking diagram I just use a draft setting - no sense in wasting ink when, ultimately, it will  be washed off the egg.

If I'm doing a paper tole type print I use the draft setting for the base print (if there's is any cutting involved) and then replace the pieces with a standard setting or photo setting on plain paper for the cut-out bits on the final layers.

Using your computer for the prints means you can print as many as you like in the quality you want without wasting any. You may find, depending on the stability of your ink, that you might have to laser copy (colour photocopy) your prints if the ink tends to run when you apply a lacquer. Test on a scrap piece until you know how your printer and the ink works for you.

Channel Scissors

What are channel scissors and where do you get them?

Channel scissors are used by stained glass people for cutting foil and lead. They have a single blade on the top which cuts down between two blades on the bottom,  cutting narrow strips of paper, which are for marking up lattice. By drawing a line around a plate or bowl you can also cut curved, even width strips of paper. Check out your local stained glass supplier in the Yellow Pages. The brand name I have is Leporitt - pattern shears for lead and foil.

No Pictures in Email

Happening an awful lot lately--getting message  [Unable to display image] and no pictures!
Didn't this problem for a long time but seems to have started in the last couple of months

If you are using XP it may be a default security setting to block attachments, which was introduced with Service Pack 1.

In Outlook Express go to Tools, Options, Security, Virus Protection to see if the "do not allow attachments etc" is checked? If it is you won't get any pictures etc in your email. Uncheck and you should be able to view attachments.
